リアル観葉植物栽培記#11 「ユーフォルビア・メロフォルミス錦」

Real Houseplant Cultivation Diary #11 "Euphorbia meloformis Nishiki"

Countless plants withered.
But I don't look back. If I do, I won't be able to keep my sanity...

My name is Suzuki and I've been gardening as a hobby for 13 years.
This is a section that introduces only plants that we have actually grown.

We would like to introduce you to Euphorbia 'Meloformis Nishiki', which shocked us when it first appeared.

What kind of plant is Euphorbia meloformis?

Meloformis is native to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
"Meloformis Nishiki" appears to be a horticultural variety that originated in Thailand.

I don't know how long it has been around in Japan, but I remember seeing it in the market around 2020.

Recently, you'll be seeing them more and more often in specialty stores.
It's still not cheap, but it's becoming more readily available.

It's a monster

"It's an Ultraman monster."
This was my impression when I first saw Melloformis nishiki.
How do you crossbreed them to make them look like this?

I searched online but couldn't find much information.
Since it was made in Thailand, you might be able to find information by searching in Thai.

The offspring emerging from the plants I'm growing also have stripes, so it looks like the pattern has become completely established.

It is made sturdy.

It is as hardy as the normal type of Meloformis.
It is relatively tolerant to heat and cold, and can be watered sparingly without any problems.
Even when the cactus we were growing next to it became wrinkled from lack of water, it remained standing there with a calm expression.

Summer temperatures have been very high recently, so be careful with shading and watering.
The plant will not die, but the leaves will get burned and the beautiful patterns will be damaged.

Growth at your own pace

Although it produces offshoots easily, they grow slowly.
It is twice as slow as Obesa, Horida, and Valida, which look similar.
The growth rate was faster when using fine Akadama soil rather than small grains.

One of the varieties that you want to grow in clumps.

Plant Gachimeter

Finally, I would like to give a score to "Euphorbia meloformis Nishiki" based on my very personal opinion.

・Ease of cultivation: 18 points. An excellent, low-maintenance plant.

Ease of training: 18 points. It is best to wait until the seedlings have grown to a certain size before harvesting them.

-Growth rate: 10 points. Not the typical growth rate of Euphorbia.

-Suitability for Osaka: 17 points The thing that is scary about Euphorbia is the cold.

・Liking level: 20 points I love monsters.

Total score: 83 points

That's all, Editor-in-Chief.
