But I don't look back. If I do, I won't be able to keep my sanity...

My name is Suzuki and I've been gardening as a hobby for 13 years.
This is a section that introduces only plants that we have actually grown.

The first to make an appearance will be the Painted Lady Philodendron.
This is a beautiful ornamental plant with randomly patterned leaves that look like they have been painted.

Ladies are strong

What I particularly feel when raising them is their "toughness."

I grow over 10 types of philodendrons, and this one is by far the hardiest.
It won't wither even if you leave it for about two weeks.
As expected, it is not very good at cold weather, and if I left it outside until around December, it weakened and lost its leaves. The plant itself will not die immediately, but it seems that it would be impossible to keep it outdoors in winter in Honshu.

Beauty can be restored

It grows quickly, so if kept indoors, it will grow leggy if there is not enough light.
The leaves also become smaller and lack pattern.

But don't worry.
If it grows too long, you can trim it back. It's okay to cut it back. Just look at the node spacing, cut the stem, and put it in a pot of water, and roots will grow. The rooting rate is as high as that of pothos.

The appeal of sturdy plants is that even if the tree loses its shape, it can be easily rebuilt.

This can be said for all climbing philodendrons, but they will likely grow more beautifully if you use moss poles or staghorn fern supports.
We haven't been able to introduce it in our home due to space limitations, but when we look at people who have introduced it, many of the plants have lots of leaves and are growing beautifully.
I would definitely like to try it next year.

I like it bright

Generally, they like bright environments, but they don't need very strong light.
If the light is too strong, the leaves will turn from yellow to pure white, so if you're having trouble deciding where to place it, it might be a good idea to use leaf color as a parameter.

If you want to make the leaves as white as possible, try using a clip light or similar and shining the light as close as possible onto the leaves. Just be careful to use an LED, as the heat from a regular light bulb will burn the leaves.

Finally, I'll give the Painted Lady Philodendron a score based on my very personal opinion.

Ease of cultivation: 15 points

- Ease of training: It can be hung like a 12-point pothos, but it looks better when placed on a moss pole or similar.
It is easy to select, but it takes some effort to finalize the tree shape, so it has received this score.

Growth rate: 17 points faster. Before you know it, your hair will be bushy.

・Suitability for Osaka: 15 points Osaka Prefecture is fine as long as you are careful about the cold.

・Likeability: 13 points. A good student who doesn't require much effort.

Total score: 70 points
