リアル観葉植物栽培記#16 「アスプレニウム・ケンゾイ」

Real Houseplant Cultivation Diary #16 "Asplenium kenzoi"

Countless plants withered.
But I don't look back. If I do, I won't be able to keep my sanity...

My name is Suzuki and I've been gardening as a hobby for 14 years.
This is a section that introduces only plants that we have actually grown.

This time we will introduce Asplenium kenzoi, which is full of jungle atmosphere.

What kind of plant is Asplenium kenzoi?

Japanese name: "Onihinokishida".
In Japan, it grows wild on Yakushima Island and the Osumi Peninsula.
I have seen Kenzoi, which is native to Yakushima, and its leaves are softer and more graceful than those commonly sold in the market.

The Kenzoi I'm raising probably has a genetic type that originated overseas.
The hard, jagged leaves grow radially.

Abyss and Cobra, which are also Asplenium species, are wider, so when the tips of their leaves wither, it is very noticeable.
In comparison, Kenzoi has thinner leaves, so it is a variety that is less likely to wither.

It's good that it's not humid.

Some people may think that since it is a fern plant, it can only be grown in humid conditions.
Ferns, including Kenzoi, sold at gardening stores and home improvement centers can be grown in the same way as regular houseplants.

Among the ferns available in the market, there are also ferns designed for paludariums.
These are often sold at stores such as tropical fish shops.

When growing Kenzoi, it is best to have a little humidity, so they will be happy if you mist them frequently.
They may lose their energy in the summer, so be careful of the heat!

Hanging is also recommended

Some tropical plants may not perform well when hung depending on the environment.
This variety naturally prefers moist soil.
Compared to other ferns, it seems that Kenzoi does not require such delicate humidity control.
It grows well in a hanging pot in my home.

The advantage of hanging the plant is that it is easier to spray the mist onto the underside of the leaves.

Plant Gachimeter

Finally, I'll give "Splenium Kenzoi" a score based on my very personal opinion.

-Ease of cultivation: 19 points - Extremely safe even for beginners!

- Ease of training: 19 points. No distortion in tree shape so far.

・Growth rate: 16 points Slower than expected.

- Osaka suitability: 19 points. It is cold-tolerant among ferns.

・Likeability: 17 points I wish it would grow faster.

Total score: 90 points

That's all, Editor-in-Chief.
