I've killed countless plants.
But I don't look back. If I did, I wouldn't be able to stay sane...
Hello, I'm Suzuki, and I've been gardening as a hobby for 14 years.
This section introduces only plants I have actually grown.
This time, I'd like to introduce "Croton," which delights gardeners with its various colors and forms.
What kind of plant is Croton?
It originates from the Malay Peninsula and Australia.
The name "Hen'yoboku" (變葉木) comes from its tendency to mutate easily.
Even crotons with cultivar names can vary greatly in color depending on the amount of sunlight they receive.
Among those without cultivar names, there are also plants with very attractive colors and shapes.
When you find your favorite, it's a moment of destiny.
It's a plant for which "Ichigo Ichie" (a once-in-a-lifetime encounter) is very fitting.
Very hardy
An easy-to-grow foliage plant that even beginners can feel at ease with.
Even if you forget to water it for a bit, it won't wilt immediately.
It can also withstand the recent summer heat.
You can also propagate it from cuttings.
Try it when pruning your plant as it grows larger!
If you bring it indoors in winter, it's less likely to lose its vigor.
There are also crotons with subdued colors, so finding a color that matches your interior is another pleasure.
Color changes with light intensity
Sunlight is often a concern with crotons.
As a plant born in a warm region, it loves bright places.
When its "leaves turn green," it's often due to insufficient light.
From mid-April to early November, when temperatures are around 25°C, it's recommended to grow it outdoors in a sunny spot.
Not only will the colors be more vibrant, but the trunk and branches will also become thicker.
However, be careful of direct sunlight in midsummer, as it can cause sunburn.
