Real Houseplant Cultivation Log #43 Trevesia palmata

I've killed countless plants.
But I don't look back. If I did, I wouldn't be able to stay sane...

I'm Suzuki, and this is my 14th year in amateur gardening.
This section introduces only plants I have actually grown.

This time, I'll be introducing "Trevesia palmata," a plant whose snowflake-like leaves captivate people.

What kind of plant is Trevesia palmata?

It is native to Indochina and other parts of Southeast Asia.
While not often seen at great heights in Japan, it can grow to nearly 8 meters tall.

It is also called the snowflake tree due to the shape of its leaves.
Despite its charming leaves, the trunk has thorns, so be careful when touching it.

Perhaps because it's a bit difficult to grow, it's not often seen in the market.

Grow it on the dry side

You might think it prefers humid environments based on its native habitat, but it actually dislikes dampness.
Perhaps because it originally lives in mountains over 800m high, it is also sensitive to heat.
If you don't take care of it in Japan from June to August, its roots might rot from the base without you realizing it.
It's that kind of plant.

It is also sensitive to cold.
There's no problem if you bring it indoors in winter, but if it's exposed to even a little cold, it can suddenly weaken and die.
It has a very delicate nature.

Actually, don't eat it

It can flower and bear fruit.
It is said to have medicinal properties and was used as a spice, but there are also stories of it being used to paralyze fish.
If it bears fruit, it's best not to eat it.
One method is to pick the flowers after they bloom to prevent the fruit from forming.
It's probably safest to grow it in a place out of reach of children and animals.

Plant Enthusiast Meter

Finally, I'll give "Trevesia palmata" a score based on my extremely personal opinion.

・Ease of growing: 13 points
It dies suddenly.

・Ease of shaping: 20 points
No special care needed.

・Growth rate: 16 points
A little slow.

・Suitability for Osaka: 17 points
Be careful with heat and cold!

・Level of fondness: 20 points
I want other leaf shapes too!

Total score: 86 points

That's all, Editor-in-chief.
