How to choose dahlias, how to prepare them, and how to display them

It's October now, and we can finally feel the autumn breeze.
It's a good season to enjoy the flowers at your leisure.
This time, I would like to introduce dahlias, which are in season in autumn.

What is Dahlia

Dahlias are in season from September to October.
It's in season right now!
Dahlias have different looks depending on how they bloom, and this diversity is one of their charms.
High quality dahlias of various varieties are available in stores.
Here are some of the most popular varieties right now.

Dahlia varieties

Variety name: "Star Prince"

Dahlia the Little Prince

This is a cactus-flowering variety with petals that have thin, pointed tips.
As the name suggests, the bright yellow, star-like flowers are gorgeous.

Variety name: "Mitchan"

Dahlia Micchan

This is a "ball-blooming" variety in which the entire flower is round like a ball.
Compared to cactus flowers, the flowers seem to last a little longer.

Variety name: "Hamilton Junior"

Daria Hamilton Jr.

This is a "decorative bloom" variety with flat petals that overlap multiple times.

How to choose dahlias

When choosing dahlias, look for ones that are not in full bloom or bud,
Choose flowers that are 70-80% in bloom and the center has not yet fully opened.
You can enjoy it for a long time.
On dahlias, the backmost petal is the first to bloom.

If something is damaged like this, it's a sign that it's been around for a while.

Also, as the days go by, the leaves will turn black and damaged,
Choose flowers with firm petals and leaves and vibrant colors.
Dahlias are not a very long-lasting flower.
It depends on the temperature and environment, but keep in mind that it will take about 5 days.

Dahlia preparation

The key to enjoying dahlias for as long as possible is
Preparation before decorating!
First, dahlias have large leaves that require a lot of water.
Remove any excess leaves, leaving a few behind.

Next, drain the water underwater.
To allow the cut surface to absorb a lot of water,
Cut it diagonally like this.
Once you have completed all the preparations, the next step is to display the flowers in your favorite vase.

How to decorate dahlias

Dahlias have large flowers that bloom horizontally.
If you face everything forward, it feels like you're being watched...!
It tends to give a feeling of oppression and a clumsy impression.

If you change the length, such as sideways or backwards,
It creates a natural atmosphere.

Dahlias have thin stems and large flowers.
It is difficult to determine the direction of the flowers in a vase with a large opening.
A vase with a narrow neck is recommended.

A single dahlia is gorgeous enough,
Depending on the season, autumn flowers and
Moving green,
You can make the decoration even more beautiful by combining branches and fruits.
This time, autumn flowers such as Fujibakama and Mishimasaiko
We have prepared willows and wild hawthorns.

Adding a spiraea will add some movement.

Along with the graceful movements of the wild hawthorn and spiraea
Dahlias look natural too
I tried arranging the flowers while keeping in mind the sides, back, height and depth.

For smaller vases, arrange the dahlia heads so that they rest on the rim of the vase.
Cutting them short will create a more balanced arrangement.

If you are a beginner, we recommend starting with one flower in a small vase.
Find your favorite dahlia!
Enjoy the autumn season as it becomes more comfortable.
