Phalaenopsis professional, Mr. Maeda
21st year at the company

In Tokushima Prefecture, he was involved in the production of large-flowered Phalaenopsis orchids in a greenhouse operated by a seed nursery. At the time, celebratory flowers were shifting from Cymbidiums to Phalaenopsis orchids, and Phalaenopsis orchids were at their peak. When the large-flowered Phalaenopsis orchid boom died down, he learned through a market introduction that the company would begin producing midi Phalaenopsis orchids for home use, and decided to join Takenaka Garden Greening. Since then, he has been in charge of producing Phalaenopsis orchids for home use at JOC for over 20 years.

Is this also a Phalaenopsis orchid? What is the difference between large and small flowers?
The size of the flowers varies.
Large flowers are about 10cm in size and are mainly used for celebrations and offerings, and can be wrapped and used for corporate events.
Small-flowered orchids are called midi Phalaenopsis orchids, and some are as small as about 3 cm. Because they are compact, they are easy to display on a desk, in the entrance, or in the living room, and are primarily used at home. In between are medium-sized orchids, which are about 7 cm in size.
Most Phalaenopsis orchids are large-flowered, so people who see midi Phalaenopsis orchids for the first time often ask, "Is this also a Phalaenopsis orchid?" Midi Phalaenopsis orchids do not have the volume of large flowers , but they still have the elegance of Phalaenopsis orchids, and are small and adorable, making them a great special gift for someone special .
Because the seedlings are small, they are easy to arrange in containers, and you can choose a pot that suits your space. There are more small-flowered varieties available than large-flowered varieties, and they come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and patterns, so you can enjoy choosing flowers even more by combining them with containers. Although the flower life depends on the environment, I feel that there is no difference between large and small flowers.
Easy! How to enjoy Phalaenopsis orchids at home

1 ) Where should I put it?
Generally, the flowering season is from spring to early summer.
A warm room with sunlight filtering through the lace is ideal.
It prefers high temperatures and humidity, and should be grown in natural conditions from spring to autumn, and in a warm room in winter, where temperatures should be kept above 10°C. Be careful not to expose it to the warm air of a heater. Avoid direct sunlight, and provide 60% shading in summer (similar to sunlight through lace) and 30% shading in winter (similar to sunlight through glass).
Just like people, too much heat and too little cold is bad for Phalaenopsis orchids. They need to live wherever they are placed. Since they cannot speak, it is most important to pay close attention to them and monitor their changes daily.
2 ) How do I water it?
Be sure to water! The key is to water sparingly.
Once the covering sphagnum moss has dried all the way through, your Phalaenopsis orchid will be delighted if you water it generously in the morning on a sunny day until water flows out from the bottom of the pot (if the pot has holes in the bottom).
If water remains in the pot for a long time, the roots will rot and become damaged. Pots with holes in the bottom will prevent water from accumulating and make it easier to tell how much water to give the plant.
Be sure to discard any water that has accumulated in the saucer or pot cover. Plants generally do not do well if they are underwatered, but overwatering is more likely to damage them. Avoid watering the sphagnum moss while its surface is still wet.
Phalaenopsis orchids are plants that originate from tropical rainforests and prefer high temperatures and humidity. They originally grew by clinging to trees and rocks with their roots exposed. They can absorb moisture from the water vapor in the air, so it is better to water them sparingly and keep them on the dry side than to overwater them.
■Seasonal watering guidelines
Spring and autumn: about once a week
Summer/Once a week
On hot days, your Phalaenopsis orchid will be happy if you spray it with mist in the morning and evening.
Winter: Once every two weeks is recommended.
The frequency and amount of watering will vary depending on humidity and sunlight, so please use this as a guide only. It's easy to tell if a Phalaenopsis orchid is healthy by looking at its leaves; dark green and firm leaves indicate a healthy state. If the leaves start to lose color or wrinkle, this is a sign that they are getting too little or too much sunlight.
3 ) Try to make it bloom again!
If you want the next flower to bloom quickly
Use clean scissors to cut the stem 2-3 nodes from the base. A new stem will appear in about 3-5 months. If it doesn't appear, you can try again by cutting it one step lower.
During hot weather, the plant may produce leaves instead of new stems, and if leaves do appear, flower buds may appear during cooler weather.
★Points
The flowers will wither starting from the area closest to the leaves. You can enjoy them until they are all in bloom, or you can cut them before they are fully in bloom to keep the Phalaenopsis plant healthy. We also recommend floating the picked flowers in water as a basin arrangement, or placing them in a vase and enjoying them as cut flowers.
If you want to keep the plant healthy and have it bloom again next year
It is recommended to repot between April and mid-June. Avoid summer and winter. After repotting, do not water for about a week. After that, water sparingly for 2-3 weeks, watering only when the sphagnum moss is dry. After that, water as usual. Be careful not to overwater, as this can damage the roots.
What I have just explained is general knowledge, and it will vary depending on the individual Phalaenopsis orchid and the environment. Recently, due to rapid climate change, care methods have also changed. Please pay attention to your Phalaenopsis orchid daily, noticing changes in the flowers, leaves, and sphagnum moss. This is one way to enjoy Phalaenopsis orchids.
Check it out! What are the highlights of Phalaenopsis orchids?
The best thing about Phalaenopsis orchids is the special feeling that can be felt from their elegant appearance ! Large-flowered Phalaenopsis orchids in particular are gorgeous and delicate, and their elegant appearance has led to them being treated as expensive flowers all over the world.
Phalaenopsis orchids are expensive because their flowers are delicate and easily damaged, and each plant requires careful management of temperature and humidity , prevention of insects and diseases , proper sunlight exposure , and watering, all of which require a lot of time and effort. This is why large-flowered Phalaenopsis orchids are an essential gift for various celebrations, such as store openings, construction completions, relocations, and election victories.
In this respect, midi Phalaenopsis orchids have that elegance, but are compact and easy to use, so you can enjoy them in any place in your home. For example, if you place a deep pink Phalaenopsis orchid in your living room, it will instantly brighten up the room and make you feel happy. When you display Phalaenopsis orchids, their elegant appearance will make you feel special.
I would like more people to experience the charm of Phalaenopsis orchids and enjoy them as a familiar flower in their own homes.
Phalaenopsis orchids are very delicate and easily damaged, so we take great care in packaging them to ensure that the flowers do not come into contact with the boxes when shipping them.
To me, Phalaenopsis orchids are like my daughter.
Are there any bad bugs?
Is it damaged? Does it have enough water? Does it have enough sun?
I care about it every day.
The shipment is to prepare the daughters they have raised for the bride.
I'm happy to see them off, but I always feel a little lonely.
Maeda gave a shy smile at the end.
thank you very much!
<Bonus>
Inside the greenhouse at night, Phalaenopsis orchids are lined up in an orderly fashion.
In order to store moisture, Phalaenopsis orchids close the stomata in their leaves during the day and open them at night to take in moisture from the air. At this time, the leaves stand up slightly, and the sight of the leaves all standing up at once is said to be very mystical and gives a sense of vitality. It's an experience that only growers can enjoy.
