[24 Solar Terms] Grain Rain

The cherry blossom season is over, and the comfortable season between spring and summer has arrived.
This time we will talk about Grain Rain, the sixth season in the 24 solar terms.

What is Grain Rain?

Grain rain refers to the period from April 19th to May 4th.
It's the time of year when the spring rains fall, irrigating the crops.
This will be a blessing for the crops.

Grain Rain Food

Spear squid is in season around the time of the grain rain.
If you like it, try it as sashimi!
The color changes from clear to brown to white depending on the freshness.

Grain Rain Flower

Spring peonies and wisteria bloom around the time of the grain rain.
Peony, known as the queen of flowers for its splendor, blooms from April to May.
In Japan, wisteria, which is mainly grown as a trellis or bonsai, also reaches its peak blooming period from mid-April to early May.
The wisteria trellis in full bloom provides shade and makes a charming spot to cool off.

The phrase for the season of grain rain: "Yasohachiya"

It was the 88th night since the beginning of spring.
It means that summer will soon be here.
It is the time for rice planting and tea picking, and tea harvested on the 88th day is said to be a medicine for longevity.

72nd generation

  • Reeds begin to sprout ( ashihajimeteshouzu )
  • The frost ends and rice seedlings begin to grow.
  • Peony flowers bloom
*The 72 seasonal divisions (shichijunikou) are a system of representing the seasons devised in ancient China. They refer to periods in which the 24 solar terms are further divided into three periods of approximately five days each.
Golden Week is just around the corner, but before then, why not take a break from going out and spend some time relaxing at home while watching the spring rain?
