リアル観葉植物栽培記#15 「ドラセナ・スルクロサ・ファニータ」

Real Houseplant Cultivation Diary #15 "Dracaena sulculosa Juanita"

Countless plants withered.
But I don't look back. If I do, I won't be able to keep my sanity...

My name is Suzuki and I've been gardening as a hobby for 14 years.
This is a section that introduces only plants that we have actually grown.

This time we will introduce Dracaena sulculosa Juanita, which has fantastic firefly spots.

What kind of plant is Dracaena sulculosa Juanita?

Juanita's homeland is the tropical region of Africa.
If you look at how it grows in the wild, it is more mottled.
The stems are thin and stretch like a climbing plant, so they make a great hanging plant.

By the way, spots with more spots (polka dots) than firefly spots are called star spots.
Is this plant famous for its fireflies and star spots a Japanese butterbur?
This is an old plant that many people in Japan plant in their gardens.
I'm also growing one.

Why is it not popular?

Juanita is not popular.
I see them left on the shelves forever.
This is a big mystery these days, when variegated varieties are so popular.

The firefly spot of the plant called Haran is popular.
Tsuwabuki is also a plant that has had enthusiasts for a long time.
So I don't think the pattern is the cause.
Perhaps the appeal of firefly spots is limited to those over 40.

Another problem is that even though it is a dracaena, the tree shape is not typical of a dracaena.

Reasonably priced considering the low volume of traffic.
Get it before the price goes up!
(Maybe it won't be that expensive...)

Dracaena properly

The way to grow it is the same as for regular dracaena.
It grows in light to partial shade.
However, be careful as the plant will grow leggy if it does not get enough sunlight during the growing season.
You may want to give it lots of water in the summer, but it seems best to water it a little sparingly.

So far it's doing fine with no insects.
They are particularly easy to raise and require little care.

Plant Gachimeter

Finally, I will give a score to the Dracaena sulculosa Juanita based on my very personal opinion.

・Ease of growing: 18 points. Just be careful of the cold.

- Ease of tailoring: 18 points. If the plant grows too long, it will look better if you trim it.

Growth rate: 16 points, very normal. Neither fast nor slow.

・Suitability for Osaka: 18 points Just be careful of the cold!

・Liking level: 20 points I love the firefly spots and star spots!

Total score: 90 points

That's all, Editor-in-Chief.
