I'm Suzuki, and this is my 14th year as a hobby gardener.
This section introduces only the plants I have personally grown.

Today, I'm introducing "Acanthus montanus Freeling's Sensation," whose sharp leaves are surprisingly painful.

What kind of plant is Acanthus montanus Freeling's Sensation?

"Freeling's Sensation" is a variegated form of "Acanthus montanus," which is native to West Africa.
Given its Japanese name, "Himeha Azami" (Dwarf-leaved Thistle), I believe it's a variety that has been in Japan for quite some time.
There's a similar variety called "Hime Azami" (Dwarf Thistle).
While their leaf shapes are similar, they produce completely different colors and forms of flowers.

It is also a different plant from the popular gardening plant "Acanthus 'Whitewater'."

Stiff, Rigid Leaves

The leaves are much stiffer than they appear, and the jagged thorns are very painful to the touch.
Despite its large leaves, the stem is thin and doesn't stand upright easily, requiring support.
Even non-variegated forms don't have very thick stems, which might be a characteristic of montanus.

Like other variegated plants, it's difficult to keep the white leaves clean, and they quickly turn brown.
I wish I had a greenhouse-like environment.

Untidy Growth Habit

Without proper light, wind, and water, it won't grow straight.
Moreover, if light doesn't shine directly from above, the stem will bend.
I believe this indicates its rapid growth rate and strong reaction to brightness.

It seems some ingenuity is needed to ensure a thick stem and maintain a good number of leaves.
Currently, I'm growing it in inorganic soil, but I plan to switch to organic soil and ensure it receives plenty of fertilizer.

Beware of cold. Too hot is also not good.

Tends to become lanky.

・Growth rate: 18 points
Grows rapidly from spring to autumn.

・Suitability for Osaka: 16 points
Dislikes hot summers and cold winters.

・Level of liking: 20 points
Its demanding nature is its charm!
