Real Houseplant Cultivation Log #35: "Philodendron warszewiczii 'Flavam' (Aurea)"

I've killed countless plants.
But I don't look back. If I did, I wouldn't be able to stay sane...

Hello, I'm Suzuki, and I've been a hobby gardener for 14 years.
This section introduces only plants that I have actually grown.

This time, I'd like to introduce the "Philodendron Warscewiczii Flavum (Aurea)," whose vibrant yellow color is dazzling to the eye.

What kind of plant is Philodendron Warscewiczii Flavum (Aurea)?

This is a Philodendron Warscewiczii that has mutated in color.
There don't seem to be any other mutations besides the color.
Like other philodendrons, its native habitat is the tropical regions of South America.
It grows quickly, thriving during the warmer seasons.

The names "Flavum" and "Aurea" are Latin for yellow and gold, respectively.
It is also sometimes sold as "Philodendron Gold."

Excellent Coloration

Among plants whose entire leaves are colored, the yellow of Flavum truly shines.
In terms of changing the ambiance of a room, it might be one of the most impactful plants.
The vibrancy is wonderfully refreshing.

Absolutely No Cold

Like the regular Warscewiczii, this variety is extremely sensitive to cold.
If you want to keep it large and beautiful, you need to keep it warm all year round.
Even when brought indoors, the leaves fall off in winter at my house, where it's not constantly heated.
Even if the leaves fall, new ones will emerge in early spring, so there's no need to worry.

From spring to autumn, give it plenty of water.
It's a robust type against everything except cold, so it's okay if it dries out a little.

Gets Thin and Leggy in the Dark

Depending on the shade, if it's too dark, the stem won't grow thick and will become thin and leggy.
Direct sunlight in summer will scorch the leaves and should be avoided, but in spring and autumn, letting it get plenty of sunlight will help it grow sturdier.

Managing it in a bright room is fine, but if it starts to get skinny, using a grow light can make a big difference.
Please give it a try!
