Countless plants withered.
But I don't look back. If I do, I won't be able to keep my sanity...
My name is Suzuki and I've been gardening as a hobby for 14 years.
This is a section that introduces only plants that we have actually grown.
This time we will introduce Dioscorea dodecanoeura, which has beautiful camouflage-patterned leaves.
What kind of plant is Dioscorea dodecanaeura?
It is a plant of the Dioscorea genus of the Dioscoreaceae family that grows mainly in South America.
The Turtle Dragon is also of the same species.
Dodecanoeura is a member of the Dioscoreaceae family, and as such produces tubers underground.
Apparently locals eat it too.
In Japan, only cuttings are sold, so I have never seen one with tubers attached.
Will it produce sweet potatoes while it is growing?
I'm looking forward to it.
Normal humidity is fine!
It seems to be a plant that prefers high humidity, but you don't need to manage the aquarium!
Although I don't pay much attention to humidity in my house, the plants are growing well.
I'm not good at watering so I'm currently growing them in a pitcher.
Some people manage their plants in pots using sphagnum moss or soil.
The temperature is rising and the roots are getting much more mature, so I'm planning to plant some in my garden soon.
Sphagnum moss carpet
It grows vigorously and its vines are spreading rapidly.
For this reason, I felt that it would be a good match to use moss poles.
However, when looking at photos of its natural habitat, you can often see it growing luxuriantly, covering the ground.
This is probably because in tropical rainforests, the closer you are to the ground, the higher the humidity and the lower the temperature.
There's little sunlight so it's fine.
When planting, I plan to use a tray instead of a flowerpot so that it can crawl around.
I'm having trouble deciding whether to use sphagnum moss or Akadama-based soil...
Plant Gachimeter
Finally, I'll give "Dioscorea dodecaneus" a score based on my very personal opinion.
Ease of growing: 13 points. Can be grown indoors in winter. Does not do well in the recent heat. Requires humidity.
-Ease of training: Same as 18-point pothos.
Growth rate: 16 points. Not slow. Not as fast as pothos.
・Osaka suitability: 18 points. OK indoors! Summer is scary.
・Likeability: 20 points The pattern, the veins, the underside of the leaf...everything is marvelous!
Total score: 85 points
That's all, Editor-in-Chief.
