[Plants and Music] #4 Cyclamen

The scent of cyclamen

The Scent of Cyclamen (1975) Lyrics and music by Akira Fuse and Kei Ogura

A relaxed guide on the theme of music related to flowers and greenery.
In the fourth installment, we will introduce cyclamen.

Cotton-colored cyclamen

What is Cyclamen?

Cyclamen is a bulbous plant of the Primula family native to the Mediterranean region. In Japan, it is also known as Kagaribibana (bonfire spark) or Butanomanju (pig bun).
The person who named it Kagaribibana was Makino Tomitaro, who was also the model for the NHK morning drama "Ranman"!
The word "Cyclamen" is said to come from the classical Greek word for "circle." Perhaps it's because the bulb is round?

The meaning of cyclamen flowers

The flower's meaning is "shyness." It is said to come from the shy, downward-looking appearance of the flower. It was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period and became popular rapidly after the war.

Shyness Legend

Cyclamen has unusual downward-facing flowers.
There is a legend that has been passed down, which is also the origin of the flower's meaning.

"King Solomon, the third king of ancient Israel, negotiated with various flowers to incorporate floral designs into his crown. (The king actually spoke directly to the flowers!?)
Negotiations broke down and we were turned down by everyone, but Cyclamen was the only one who agreed.
When King Solomon expressed his gratitude, Cyclamen was so embarrassed and happy that she bowed her head shyly.

Whether you believe it or not is up to you (lol) .

Music related to cyclamen

Now, speaking of songs related to cyclamen...
It must be Akira Fuse's "Scent of Cyclamen" (lyrics and music by Kei Ogura), which won the Grand Prize at the 1975 Japan Record Awards.

There is nothing more refreshing than a cotton-colored cyclamen, just like you were when we first met.
